Group Description :   

TUESDAY BOOK GROUP

This group shares and discusses both fiction and non-fiction books. Every few months group members have a planning meeting when we collaboratively choose a range of books to include in our ‘book of the month’ programme. The group currently meets on the second Tuesday of each month, starting at 2pm.

The Scarlet and the Black  by   JP Gallagher.

 J. P. Gallagher's book published in 1967 tells the story of Monsignor Hugh O' Flaherty, a real-life Irish Catholic priest who during WW2 saved thousands of Jews and escaped Allied prisoners.  Based at the Vatican, O' Flaherty used his credentials and privileges to achieve his ends, right under the noses of the occupying German army in Rome.  The title The Scarlet and the Black is a reference not only to the black cassock and scarlet sash worn by monsignors and bishops in the Catholic Church, but also to the dominant colours of Nazi Party regalia.

Meetings are, on a voluntary basis and in rotation, hosted by group members at their homes. It must be emphasised that hosting is not a condition of group membership, so please don't be put off from getting in touch because you are unable or not willing to offer a space for the group to meet in.
